I think we need a area to talk about experinences in some of these sites. For the most part, what works for one does not always work for the other. A lot of these sites are based on styles of music. Over the years, the sites that did not match when started, all of a sudden there is a interest in the style you do. Maybe the membership grows up or grows in size so the numbers change.
Anyway, I think a place to compare notes might be in order, not just a list of links.

Live gigs in my area in what I do, does not exists. Till now that is, we are going to put one on the 10 Oct 2009. I manage to secure a place to perform and allow me to put on other events. Something that has been lacking in my area for a while.
I have been getting a lot of rejections lately due to not performing live. Like that somehow validates you? This event will be flilmed, made into a DVD to use as a biz card for those who seem to have this demand. I am very sure, once it is done, another hurdle will just appear. ;-) you can not win, just do the best you can.

Oh, another good site (if you're OK with people using your music in podcasts for free) is http://www.musicalley.com
This used to be music.podshow.com, but I think someone bought them at one point...(still need to update my links).
Anyways, honestly, the most activity I've had on my music, both exposure to other folks as well as bounces back to my website, is through having my music used in podcasts....
http://dantharpmusic.com/Sightings.aspx?Type=PodCasts
It's a great avenue to get yourself known.
I've had several people buy my CDs and tell me they heard me first on a podcast.
Something to consider...podcasts commonly get overlooked.
Actually, come to think of it...the couple film gigs I've run across have come from my music having been posted on http://www.musicalley.com/music/listeners/searchResults.php?SearchString=dan+tharp

I've spent a lot of time looking for websites where I can post my music...since I'm a chicken-s**t about performing live.....posting my music online is basically my only outlet! :)
Anyways, not trying to be self-serving....you can see several of the sites I've posted my music to at this address:
http://dantharpmusic.com/Sightings.aspx?Type=MusicWebsites
These are websites I've had success at.
The ones I've had most success with are:
www.garageband.com - surprisingly, not being a "garage band", I've done really well there. Occasionally I get the "you suck because you don't sing" people, but for the most part, this site has been very receptive to my music.
I used to really like AmieStreet.com, but it's just completely tanked over the past year....don't waste your time there.
Ourstage.com is good - same thing. I've been very fortunate there, although it seems lately that instrumentalists are getting slighted there, it's still a good point of exposure.
A lot of musicians swear reverbnation.com is the best arouind - It's OK...I just haven't seen as much success there as I'd like...but it's still a good site.
Another film-related site I use is http://www.versusmedia.com - I get notices from them when film makers are looking for certain kinds of music and if they weren't always looking for non-instrumental music, I might have a chance.
I've got a couple more I've been testing out that I haven't added to my site yet (just cause I'm a lazy bastard!) but when I do, I'll make sure to post them here.
GREAT GROUP, by the way.....this is a much needed area for collaboration.
Making your presence known isn't as easy as it seems!
Tip: Always get in the habit of adding your website in your signature!
Later! Dan. http://dantharpmusic.com :)
